Crawford County offers a mix of heavy timber and creek bottoms that can make recovery difficult after the shot. When a blood trail gives out near the Embarras River or in the thick brush outside of Robinson, a tracking dog is often the most reliable way to locate your deer. These handlers understand the local terrain and how the wind moves through the river hills.
We currently have one tracking service listed in the county, based out of Flat Rock. Jonathan Beachy provides dog tracking assistance to hunters throughout the area. If you have a hit but can't find the deer, it is best to back out early and call for a dog before the trail gets cold or contaminated by too much foot traffic.

A blood tracking dog handler works a leashed dog on the wound line to recover a deer that did not go down in sight. Most handlers are volunteers or charge a modest call fee, and most cover a set radius of counties.
Many handlers work for gas money or a modest flat fee; some charge more for long drives or overnight calls. Recovery is never guaranteed, and fees are usually owed either way.
Call early and stop walking the line. The most common reason a track fails is a hunter and friends grid-searching the area first and contaminating the scent.
